Day 4

~ Arrive at Valencia Airport at 7:45 P.M.

~ Take a Taxis from the Airport to your hotel. $20

~ Check in at the Beatriz Rey Don Jaime in Valencia, Spain. $124.98

Day 5

~ Take it easy today and explore the city. The Fallas festeval is in full swing. The Fallas are the celebration of St.Joseph. Each neighbourhood of the city has an organized group of people, the Casal faller, that works all year long holding fundraising parties and dinners, usually featuring the famous speciality paella. Formerly, much time would also be spent at the Casal Faller preparing the ninots or dolls. Each group takes its ninot out for a grand parade, and then mounts it, each on its own elaborate firecracker-filled cardboard and papier-mâché artistic monument in a street of the given neighborhood. This whole assembly is a falla.

Day 6

~ After leaving the hotel today you’ll see a bull fight ($35.32) from the stands of a colloseum. Vicente Barrera, grandson of Vicente Barrera the matador whom Hemingway takes to task for his killing technique in Death in the Afternoon, is preforming on the final day of the festeval.

After the show, head to the square of town where the final pyrotechnic display will occur.  This traditon is called …

La Mascletà

Day 7

~ When you wake today the aftermath of the nights celebration will be overwelming with the falla still burning in the streets.  Check out of your hotel and venture toward Pamplona, Spain.

There is something intoxicating and dangerous and reckless in the way the Spanish celebrate, which is what must have drawn Hemingway to their way of life. It is physical and hard and colourful and noisy and yet has a rare sense of historical continuity.

~ Board a train to Madrid and then on to Pamplona…

Kenya, Africa

October 2, 2008 at 1:41 am (Uncategorized)

Day 14 , 15, 16, 17, 18, 19

Upon arrival in Kenya, your guide will arrange to meet you at the airport and drive to the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro located in Tanzania.  All travel here will be handled by your tour guide and included in your total cost.

Mt.Kilimanjaro is located on the border of Tanzania and Uganda.  The highest point on Kilimanjaro is Uhuru Peak, on the volcano Kibo 5,895 meters.

While it is inactive, Kilimanjaro has fumaroles that emit gas in the crater on the main summit of Kibo. Scientists concluded in 2003 that molten magma is just 400 metres (1,300 ft) below the summit crater. Several collapses and landslides have occurred on Kibo in the past, one creating the area known as the western breach.

There are several routes by which to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, namely, Marangu, Rongai, Lemosho, Shira, Umbwe and Machame. Of all the routes, Machame is by far the most scenic albeit steeper route up the mountain. The Rongai is the easiest camping route and the Marangu is also easy, but accommodation is in huts. As a result, this route tends to be very busy and ascent and descent routes are the same.

Day 20, 21, 22

Uganda East African Safari Resort $360

Nile River

Traveling through 10 countries, the Nile is the longest river in Africa. Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Kenya all reap the fruits from the rich and fertile banks of the Nile.  The Nile is made of two major tributaries, the White and Blue Niles.  The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilization has depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population of Egypt and all of its cities, with the exception of those near the coast, lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan; and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river. The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

Day 23

~ Upon Arrival in Italy, proceed to your hotel. Hotel le Boulevard $453

Day 24

Visit the terrace where Hemingway  first read of his supposed demise.  The hotel Gritti Palace. Take a day trip via bus to Hemingway sites including the town of Schio, site of the “Schio Country Club,” the name given to the headquarters of the Red Cross Ambulance Corps in which Hemingway served. You’ll also visit Fossalta do Piave, where Hemingway was wounded as an 18 year old ambulance driver.

Day 25

Travel to Venice proper with a walk to Piazza San Marco. You might want to stop at the Basilica di San Marco, include an elevator ride up the Campanile for a bird’s eye view of Venice, and linger at the Museo Correr (museum of Venetian civilization).

Stop for afternoon tea at the Piazza’s oldest and most literary cafe, the Caffe Florian and a late afternoon refreshment at Harry’s Bar, a Hemingway favorite watering hole where the Bellini cocktail was invented.

After lunch, we’ll proceed to Kobarid, Slovenia (formerly “Caporetto, Italy”) and the area of the 12th Isonzo Battle (also known as the Caporetto Breakthrough) one of history’s major conflicts and a decisive battle and retreat in World War I that fueled Hemingway’s imagination for his novel, “A Farewell to Arms.” The Kobarid Museum has a balanced approach to the World War I fighting in the region. The city has a large, multi-tiered, Italian War Memorial. The museum honors Hemingway in its entrance way with a large portrait and copies of his novel’s manuscript pages.

To get to Cuba, you will first need to fly into Cancun.
